I had a sneaky trip back to sunny, scorching hot London for this Friday just gone, which was just pure joy. I was there for an interview for a potential design internship for a few weeks in the summer in the morning, which I felt went fairly well, but we will have to wait to hear for the outcome!

In the meantime, being finished by 10.30am I had the rest of the day to spend in London, or East London specifically. My first stop being London Graphic Centre around the corner to get a lovely discounted layout pad which is always useful! Strolling about from there I had realised I had unluckily just missed Clerkenwell Design week which had finished the day before but could still see the remains of what had been there with signs in shop windows etc. Stopping for some lunch from a Co-op I sat down outside in a bench area and watched the world gone by for a little while en route to Old Street where the tiny but lovely Kemistry Gallery is. There was an exhibition on just about to finish of lovely topical prints made about the London Olympic Games, and then onto the White Cube looking over Hoxton Square as a short stop too, and on the way coming across some lovely little shops and other galleries around. Then I made my way to Shoreditch to check out the Box Park pop up mall which was interesting and very buzzy with people dining on the top deck, and sunbathing around the open areas. Then wondering where else I could walk to nearby and towards the way back home I discovered I could walk to Liverpool Street in 5 minutes, so that’s exactly what I did! I am familiar with the Spitalfields markets around there which are great to go to especially on a Sunday for more vintage items, but there is something going on there pretty much every day. Reaching there I stumbled upon what must have been the end of a Jive club in the afternoon with many people gathering around enjoying the live music and dancing. And then strolling around the stalls is always interesting with many creative people around to talk to who make and sell their work and designs, also including clothes and miscellaneous items. There’s just never a dull moment in London. After that with some tired feet I had a sit down and read some magazines and leaflets that I had picked up walking around and enjoyed the sun in a central seating area with many others having the same idea. It was such a great atmosphere with everyone upbeat and coming together to enjoy the sun. After a long while I felt it my time to make my way home with a short walk to the station before rush hour began. All in all it was a very creative, productive and well deserved day off enjoying the sunshine while it lasts… I just have to get seriously back to work now for my end of year hand in on Thursday and then I have a wonderful summer ahead of me. I cannot wait! Look out for my work being uploaded on here soon once all my stresses are out of the way!

I’m really into the band, Metronomy at the moment. This video is from their previous album, ‘Nights Out’, and their songs from their new album ‘The English Riviera’ are just as great. I find this video is very clever and funny, where all of their videos are very tongue-in-cheek. And their single, ‘The Bay’ has a very summery sound. Watch out for them, I just thought I’d share this with you all.

Peter Blake’s Alphabets

Here are some photos of this brilliant book that brings together all of Peter Blake’s alphabets he compiled throughout his life as a wonderful collection. There is a real mixture, some illustrative, some more obvious and some rather witty. One of my tutors from university, Douglas Wilson, well known within the publishing industry, worked with Peter Blake over months to put this book together, combined with Mel Gooding who put the text together.

We were also very lucky to have a guest lecture from Mel Gooding which was bizarre yet very insightful and intriguing. He talked about anything and everything to with typography and language, which I find very interesting generally and consequently inspired me to want to do more typographic work in the near future.

Please excuse my terrible photography, my camera screen was half broken at the time!

Being friendly definitely pays off!

This was another group project at the end of our first year where we were given several themes to make any form of animation based upon, but could be as loosely connected as you like. As a group we chose to go with the ‘one by one’ topic in which ours was loosely based on it by making our stop-motion animation a string of events. I found this project really fun and although there was no real purpose to it we found that it could be used as an advertisement for a creative/educational purpose, in which Apple seemed to fit pretty well.

Switch on to switch off

This was my very first film and group project of any kind, completed within my first year at University on my course. We were given several world topics/issues that were fairly current and relevant to us and from that we had to create a short film/advertisement to help put that issue or message across. This was our outcome to help raise awareness and show how easy and important it is to turn your appliances off where possible in relation to the Earth Hour/Big Switch Off campaigns, by showing how if you don’t, it can play on your conscience. I hope you enjoy!

Some more photographs from New York.
Well, as I have mentioned, I went to New York very recently for 5 days with the graphic design course with my university. I have been before around 4 years ago, but this time we were pretty much free to do what we wanted to do and go where we wanted to go as well as have 1 or 2 design studio visits whilst we were out there. I was lucky enough to go to both of the ones that I wanted to go to, Interbrand and Pentagram. It was so inspiring to see the environments that they work in there as well as the incredible location of being in New York, both along 5th Avenue. We were shown their work and we were able to ask questions if we wanted to, which made the trip even more worthwhile. Being a little older now and as a design student, I definitely noticed more and appreciated New York for what it was, the glamorous and not so glamorous compared to last time, just taking in the atmosphere and finding myself looking up constantly thinking how incredible the architecture was, with the sights, sounds and smells a fest for the senses. We went to MoMa, which was definitely something I wanted to do whilst out there, which had a great mix of some classic artwork which was brilliant to see up close as well as some modern less well-known works that I was unaware of. Unfortunately, not being 21 whilst there, I couldn’t experience the true New York at night, but that didn’t matter as walking around during the day and seeing as many things as possible was very tiring as there is a LOT of ground to cover, with a few trips on the Subway and cab rides too, but it’s all part of the experience..Plus of course some shopping too!
